A Feasibility Study for the Transition to Electric Mobility in the Island of Favignana

2021

The energy transition and climate neutrality are a short time scenario as climate concerns are rising fast. Small islands are natural microgrids in which the energy transition is subjected to economic and regulatory constraints and highly challenged by technical issues. As a first step, the Mediterranean island of Favignana has been considered in this study, to assess how electric mobility could impact the power system. According to the plans from the local decision makers, the island is moving towards a full public electric mobility in the near term, also due to the participation in the BloRin project. For this reason, a feasibility study about the technical and environmental impact of ele…

Elites in Finnish energy policy and biogas as a motor vehicle fuel

2011

The intent of this research was to find out what is the state of Finnish energy policy when reviewing it from the vantage point of biogas as a motor vehicle fuel. It seemed, according to previous research, that Finnish energy policy is lead by an elite and that there was a lack in transparency of energy policy. Therefore, in addition to researching the question of transparency and the possible elite structure, the research questions were: Who are these elites? Why do they exist and what makes others not members of the elite? Within what context do they exist? The question “Who?” will define the elite structure in Finland. “Why?” will tell us why this elite structure exists, thus giving poss…

Shell-model computed cross sections for charged-current scattering of astrophysical neutrinos off 40Ar

2018

Charged-current (anti)neutrino-$^{40}\mathrm{Ar}$ cross sections for astrophysical neutrinos have been calculated. The initial and final nuclear states were calculated using the nuclear shell model. The folded solar-neutrino scattering cross section was found to be $1.78(23)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}42}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}{\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$, which is higher than what the previous papers have reported. The contributions from the ${1}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ and ${2}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ multipoles were found to be significant at supernova-neutrino energies, confirming the random-phase approximation (RPA) result of a previous study. The effects of neutrino flavor conve…

Characterization of a CZT focal plane small prototype for hard X-ray telescope

2005

The promise of good energy and spatial resolution coupled with high efficiency and room temperature operation has fuelled a large international effort to develop cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) for hard X-ray applications. We are involved on the development of a hard X-ray telescope based on multilayer optics and focal plane detector operative in the 10-80 keV energy range. This telescope requires a high efficiency focal plane providing both fine spatial resolution and spectroscopy with a compact and robust design. This paper reports preliminary results on the characterization both in spectroscopic and spatial response of two small pixellated CZT detectors (10times10times1 mm3 and 10times10tim…

First trap-assisted decay spectroscopy of the $$^{81}$$Ge ground state

2022

AbstractThe $$\beta $$ β -delayed $$\gamma $$ γ spectroscopy of $$^{81}$$ 81 As has been performed using a purified beam of $$^{81}$$ 81 Ge $$(9/2^+)$$ ( 9 / 2 + ) ground state at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line facility (IGISOL). The $$^{81}$$ 81 Ge$$^+$$ + ions were produced using proton-induced fission of $$^{232}$$ 232 Th and selected with the double Penning trap JYFLTRAP for the post-trap decay spectroscopy measurements. The low-spin $$(1/2^+)$$ ( 1 / 2 + ) isomeric-state ions $$^{81m}\hbox {Ge}^+$$ 81 m Ge + were not observed in the fission products. The intrinsic half-life of the $$^{81}$$ 81 Ge ground state has been determined as $$T_{1/2}=6.4(2)~\hbox {s}$$ T 1 / 2 = 6.4 ( …

Spectroscopy of short-lived radioactive molecules

2020

Molecular spectroscopy offers opportunities for the exploration of the fundamental laws of nature and the search for new particle physics beyond the standard model1–4. Radioactive molecules—in which one or more of the atoms possesses a radioactive nucleus—can contain heavy and deformed nuclei, offering high sensitivity for investigating parity- and time-reversal-violation effects5,6. Radium monofluoride, RaF, is of particular interest because it is predicted to have an electronic structure appropriate for laser cooling6, thus paving the way for its use in high-precision spectroscopic studies. Furthermore, the effects of symmetry-violating nuclear moments are strongly enhanced5,7–9 in molecu…

Measurement of the Higgs boson coupling with tau leptons and search for an additional neutral MSSM Higgs boson with the ATLAS detector

2018

Phenomenology of low-scale Seesaw Models

2016

All the observed particles are well accommodated in the Standard Model, together with the basic forces. However, there are both experimental and theoretical hints that the Standard Model can not be a complete theory and that New Physics is needed. Some of the theoretical problems are: i) The flavor-puzzle, i.e., why are there three copies of particles differing only by their mass. Most of the free parameters in the Standard Model are linked to this puzzle. They have been measured, but their values do not follow any clear pattern and their origin remains elusive. ii) The strong CP problem, that is, why the CP symmetry is conserved in the strong interactions in the Standard Model, which is no…

Supersymmetric technicolor

2011

In this thesis, we consider a supersymmetrized version of the Standard Model extended with a technicolor sector. We specialize in the regime of the model in which the technicolor sector is fully responsible of the electroweak symmetry breaking and the natural elementary Higgses of the supersymmetric model only transmit the breaking to the Standard Model fermions, thereby giving them masses. In particular, we consider the vacuum structure of the effective theory, find it to be different to that of a mere technicolor model and study the contributions of the new sector to the oblique electroweak parameters. Relative to the current experimental limits, we find the model viable.
